Many of Honolulu's attractions and points of interest are located within walking distance of one another. For instance, you may be interested in visiting the only royal palace on U.S. soil -- the Iolani Palace. This was the home of the Hawaiian Kingdom's last two monarchs, King Kalakaua and his sister and successor Queen Liliuokalani. After the overthrow of the monarchy, the Palace was neglected, however during the 1970s restoration of this landmark began. The preservation of this National Historic Landmark continues, and visitors can enjoy the precise historic restorations while learning about the heritage and history of Hawaii.
Not far from the Iolani Palace is the Kawaiahao Church, often referred to as the "Westminster Abbey of Hawaii". This was not only the first Christian Church in the state of Hawaii, but it was also made from over 14 million pounds of coral!
Other attractions include the Aloha Tower, located in the downtown area of Honolulu. The tower took a year and a half to build, and was opened in 1926. The Aloha Tower was originally meant to create a lasting impression for arriving and departing visitors, but it also was made to be a very practical building. Not only does it provide a spectacular view of the entire harbor, but it also served as a lighthouse. Even from 16 miles out at sea, this magnificent tower could still be seen! Custom offices, including those that were dedicated to passenger arrival and departures, as well as those for the harbor pilots, staff, and the harbor master also occupied the tower. This functional, yet beautiful tower was the tallest building in all of Hawaii for four decades, standing at 184 feet, 2 inches. Even though since the Aloha Tower was built, many taller high-rise office buildings have appeared, the Aloha Tower is still an impressive welcome to visitors.
